Some pairs show the outer coating peeling before anything structural fails. Treat them as boots you replace on a schedule rather than resole, because none of these are built to be resoled.

The waterproofing has stopped working. Can I fix it?

Sometimes. Two things keep water out: the membrane inside, and the repellent coating outside that makes water bead. The coating wears off first, and when it does the fabric soaks through even though the membrane is fine. Clean the boots, since dirt alone causes that, then reproof damp boots with a suede and nubuck product rather than wax. If water gets in while the outside still beads, the membrane has failed and no treatment will restore it.

How much does boot weight really matter?

More than most people expect. Weight carried on the feet costs roughly 4.7 to 6.3 times the energy of the same weight on your torso, and each extra 100 grams on a shoe raises oxygen consumption by about 0.7 to 1.0 percent. How do I stop getting blisters?

Keep your feet dry and your boots fitted. Research found hiking in wet socks carried 1.94 times the blister risk, and separately that higher skin hydration on the foot goes with more blisters. Carry a spare pair of socks and change them on long days. Then make sure the boots are correctly sized and broken in, which is what the prevention research keeps returning to.

Should I buy wool or synthetic socks?

The research is more relaxed about this than shops are. One study of hikers found the proportion of natural to synthetic fibre was not related to whether blisters appeared. Do I need ankle support, or will trail shoes do?

On maintained paths with a day pack, plenty of people walk comfortably in low shoes. A cuff limits your ankle rolling but also limits normal movement, so treat height as a choice matched to your terrain rather than a safety requirement.

How long do these take to break in?

Less than you would expect. The suede uppers here flex far sooner than stiff full-grain leather, so a few walks is usually enough and many pairs are comfortable from the first wear. Do the breaking in before a big day out rather than during one, since blister research points consistently at broken-in footwear.
