The care label decides this, and it is a regulated instruction rather than a suggestion, so read it before the machine door opens. If the label is gone, identify the filling by squeezing the pillow. Filling that shifts and rustles under your hand is loose fill, which means down, feather, polyester or shredded foam, and all of those tumble safely at low heat. A pillow that is one solid springy block is memory foam or latex. Those do not belong in a dryer at any setting. Heat breaks down the cell structure that gives foam its support, and the damage is permanent and invisible until the pillow feels dead in the middle. Shredded foam sits in between and behaves like loose fill, so it dries fine on a no-heat or low setting. When you genuinely cannot tell, treat it as foam and air dry, because that choice costs you time while the wrong choice costs you the pillow.
Why low heat and why tennis balls
High heat fuses synthetic fibres into clumps, and tennis balls keep knocking the filling apart while it dries.
Two things go wrong in a hot dryer. The first is melting. Polyester fill is plastic fibre, and enough heat softens the fibres so they weld to each other at their contact points. The pillow comes out with hard nuggets inside that no amount of fluffing will separate, because they are now one piece. Low heat stays below that threshold. The second problem is matting. Wet filling clings together, and as it dries in a clump it sets in that shape. This is where the tennis balls earn their place. As the drum turns, the balls fall through the pillow and punch the packed fill apart from the inside, over and over, so the fibres dry separated rather than fused. Two clean balls are enough, and purpose-made dryer balls do the same job. Add them at the start rather than partway through, because filling that has already set is much harder to break up again.
How long it really takes
Two or three full cycles is normal, with hand fluffing between them, and surface dryness means nothing.
A pillow is thick, and the drying front moves inward slowly from every face. So the outside can feel warm and dry while the core is still holding water. People stop at that point, which is exactly how a damp pillow ends up back on a bed. Plan for two or three complete cycles instead of one. Between each, take the pillow out and work it with your hands, pulling apart any clumps you can feel, then put it back with the balls. This does two things: it exposes wet filling to the air, and it stops the packed sections drying into permanent lumps. The test at the end is touch, not time. Push your fingers deep into the centre and hold them there. Warmth and lightness mean done. Any coolness, weight or a faint clammy feel means water is still in there and it needs another cycle.
Drying without a dryer
Air drying works for any fill type and is the only option for solid foam, but it needs moving air and patience.
You do not need a machine, and for foam you must not use one. Air drying works on the same principle, which is moving dry air past every surface for long enough. Lay the pillow flat on a rack rather than draping it over a line, since a folded pillow traps a wet pocket at the crease that can stay damp for days. Choose somewhere with air movement and low humidity, and turn the pillow every few hours so no face stays pressed against the rack. Outdoors on a dry breezy day is ideal and usually faster than indoors. Sunlight helps too, though strong sun over many hours can yellow some fabrics, so use it in stretches rather than all day. Expect a full day at minimum and longer for a thick pillow. The same centre test applies before it goes back on the bed.
Why damp filling is worth taking seriously
Moisture trapped inside supports mould growth and the humid conditions dust mites need.
This is the reason to be strict about drying rather than approximate. Mould follows moisture, and material that stays damp indoors gives it the conditions it needs. A pillow interior is dark, still and insulated, which makes it a good place for that to happen quietly. You will usually smell it before you see anything. Dust mites are the other concern, since they are a common indoor allergen associated with bedding and they do better in humid conditions than dry ones. So a pillow that is repeatedly half-dried is working against the reason you washed it. Getting it properly dry, and keeping a zipped protector on it afterwards, does more for the air around your head than washing frequency does. If a pillow has been left damp long enough to smell musty, wash and fully dry it once, and if the smell survives that, replace it rather than trying again.
