Material sets the ceiling, so start there. Latex is the most durable of the common options. It is naturally elastic and returns to shape after being compressed, so a good latex topper often stays useful beyond five years. Memory foam comes next and usually gives three to five, with density being the deciding factor rather than thickness. Denser foam has more material per unit of volume, so it resists permanent compression better, and a thick low-density topper will fail sooner than a thinner dense one. Wool sits around three years and compresses gradually rather than collapsing. Feather, down and polyester fibrefill are the shortest lived, often one to three years, because they are loose fill held in chambers and every night pushes that fill outward from where you lie. None of these numbers are guarantees. They are the range a topper reaches when it is looked after, and the practical life is set by what happens next.
What actually wears a topper out
Repeated compression in the same spots, body weight, heat and moisture all shorten its life.
A topper fails where you lie, not evenly. Your hips and shoulders carry most of your weight into a small area, and that area is compressed for seven or eight hours a night. Foam responds by losing some of its ability to spring back, and loose fill responds by migrating sideways out of the loaded zone. Either way you end up with two shallow troughs and a ridge between them. Body weight accelerates this in a straightforward way: more load per night means faster compression, so a heavier sleeper on the same topper will reach the same state sooner. Heat and moisture do quieter damage. Memory foam softens when warm, which is why it feels different in summer, and repeated softening under load speeds up the permanent set. Sweat adds moisture into the material, and a topper that never dries fully degrades faster and can develop odour that will not wash out.
The test that tells you it is finished
Strip the bed, look along the surface at eye level, and press the worn area: a dent that stays is the end.
Guessing from how you feel in the morning is unreliable, because the change happens too slowly to notice. Test it directly instead. Take everything off the bed so the topper is bare, then crouch so your eye is level with the surface and look along its length. A healthy topper reads as a flat plane. A worn one shows visible dips where each person sleeps. Then press your hand firmly into the deepest dip, hold for a few seconds and let go. Good material rises back to level within a moment. If the impression stays, the structure has taken a permanent set and no amount of rotating will bring it back. One more check applies to foam: fold a corner over on itself and release it. Foam near the end of its life feels crumbly at the fold or is slow and reluctant to return.
Getting more years out of it
Rotate it regularly, keep it protected and dry, and make sure the mattress underneath is still sound.
Rotation is the single most effective habit. Turn the topper end to end every couple of months so your body is not always loading the same spots, which spreads the compression across more of the material. Flip it as well if both faces are designed for use, though many toppers have a defined top and bottom, so check before assuming. A protector helps more than people expect. It keeps sweat and skin oils out of the material, and since moisture speeds degradation and causes odour, that alone extends life. Air the topper when you change the sheets by pulling everything back for half an hour, so the moisture from the night evaporates instead of being sealed in. Finally, check what is underneath. A topper laid on a sagging mattress conforms to that sag and wears into the same shape quickly. A topper cannot fix a failed mattress, and trying to use it that way destroys the topper in a fraction of its normal life.
Replace or repair
There is no meaningful repair for a compressed topper; replace it, and choose density over thickness next time.
Once foam has taken a permanent set, nothing restores it. There is no equivalent of fluffing for solid foam, and airing or sunning it will not rebuild collapsed cell structure. Loose fill toppers can be redistributed by hand and shaken out, which buys a little time, but once the fill has broken down into smaller fragments it stops holding loft at all. So the decision is simply when, not whether. When you replace, buy on density rather than thickness for foam, since density is what predicts how long it will resist compression. Look for a certification that tells you what the foam actually contains, since foam used in bedding can be certified against content and emissions criteria. And check that the mattress under it is still sound first, because putting a new topper on a failed mattress is the fastest way to need another new topper.
