Every TV size to distance chart traces back to the same underlying idea: the eye has a fixed limit on how many pixels it can resolve per degree of vision, so the right distance depends on both the size of the screen and the sharpness of what's playing on it. Engineers measure this in picture heights rather than diagonal inches, because height is the dimension that actually sets how much of your visual field the image fills.
For a standard 16:9 smart TV, a 55-inch screen is about 27 inches tall, a 65-inch is about 32 inches tall, and an 85-inch stretches to roughly 42 inches. Multiply those heights by the distance ratio for whatever you're watching and the numbers get concrete: a 55-inch set at 1080p wants around 7 feet of separation, a 65-inch wants about 8.5 feet, and an 85-inch is comfortable near 11 feet. Sit much closer than that on 1080p content and individual scan lines start to show. Sit much farther and you're paying for screen real estate the couch never uses.

Why 4K changes the math
The International Telecommunication Union's own broadcast standard sets a 31-degree optimal viewing angle for 1080p content and a much wider 58-degree angle for 4K UHD, which is the technical reason 4K lets you sit closer for the same screen size.
The numbers above aren't a marketing rule of thumb. They come from Recommendation ITU-R BT.500-14, published by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations agency that sets broadcast and display testing standards. Its Table 1-1 lists an optimal viewing distance of 3.2 picture heights for 1920x1080 content, at a 31-degree horizontal viewing angle, and 1.6 picture heights for 3840x2160 (4K UHD) content, at a 58-degree angle. Half the distance, four times the pixels: that's the entire case for buying a bigger 4K set instead of a smaller 1080p one for the same room.
The ITU's own table is more forgiving than the headline number suggests, though. Its note for UHD content specifies that 1.6 picture heights is the distance for testing resolution specifically; for ordinary viewing, the range runs from 1.6 up to 3.2 picture heights, and most living rooms land closer to the middle of that band than the extreme edge. Split the difference at roughly 2.4 picture heights and a 65-inch 4K set is comfortable around 6.5 feet, not the 4.25 feet the tightest resolving-limit number implies. The 4.25-foot figure is real, but it describes how close you could sit before losing pixel-level detail, not how close you'd actually want to be for two hours of a movie.
32 to 55 inches: bedrooms, dens, and secondary rooms
Smaller sets in the 32- to 55-inch range fit rooms where the seating distance tops out around 4 to 7 feet, which covers most bedrooms, home offices, and secondary living spaces.

None of these smaller sizes need 4K to look sharp at their intended distance. Ordinary 1080p content resolves cleanly well past the point most people would ever want to sit that close, which is part of why smaller sets remain the practical, unglamorous choice for a spare room.
60 to 85 inches: the main living room screen
Sets from 60 to 85 inches need real distance to work: a 65-inch wants around 8.5 feet for 1080p content, and an 85-inch wants closer to 11 feet, so measure the room before falling for the biggest screen in the store.

How to measure your room and pick a size
Measure the actual seat-to-wall distance in your room, not the salesroom floor, then match that number to the chart; for most buyers, what size TV should I buy comes down to that one measurement plus whether the source is mostly 4K.
A tape measure settles more TV size arguments than any showroom demo. Measure from the wall where the TV will hang to the front edge of the couch cushion, in feet, then work the chart backward: multiply that number by about 7.6 to get a comfortable diagonal size in inches for 1080p content, or by about 10 if the source will be almost entirely 4K. A room with 8 feet of clearance points toward a 60- to 65-inch smart TV size for 1080p content, or something closer to 80 inches if the household mostly streams native 4K.

What size TV should I buy still has a second half to the question beyond distance.
